The
Nilgiris is derived from the words Nila-Giri that means Blue Mountains.
This mountain
range is an important part of the great plateau occupying the junction
of the Eastern and Western Ghats. The Nilgiris is over 850 years
old and got its name due to the fact that a blue haze generally
envelops this range.
The Nilgiris
has plenty of tea and coffee plantations. The tea produced in the
Nilgiris is second in importance after the famous Darjeeling tea.
The other products that are produced in the Nilgiris are Eucalyptus
Oil, Scented Phenol, Geranium and Cinchona products.
The Nilgiri
district is known for its ancient tribes such as the Todas, the
Kotas, the Kurumbhas, the Panias, and the Irulas.
Udhagamandalam,
the Queen of Hill Stations popularly known as Ooty is a major
tourist attraction. The small towns of Coonoor and Kotagiri
