COONOOR
Coonoor
is a small town situated 6000 feet (1800 meters) above
mean sea level in the Nilgiri range. This town is
the main tea trade centre for the whole of the Nilgiris.
Auctioning
off of various types of tea from different tea estates
in the Nilgiris takes place at the famous UPASI (United
Planters Association of Southern India) Centre.
It
is not only the natural beauty and the pleasant climate
of Coonoor that attracts tourists in large numbers,
but also the various places of tourist interest like
Sim's Park, the Pomological Gardens, the Pasteur Institute,
the Silk Factory, Lamb's Rock, Dolphins Nose, Loz
Falls, St. Catherine Falls, and Lady Canning's Seat.
The
Pasteur Institute situated in this town was opened
on April 25th 1907 and has been named after Louis
Pasteur. This 93 year old institute is one of the
two institutes which manufactures the famous Anti-
Rabies vaccine and also treats people affected by
the rabies virus.
